A Shawl Journey …

Back in January 2018 I released a special shawl as part of The Knitting Goddess Shawl Club 2018 …

Stratified

This shawl uses seven mini skeins from The Knitting Goddess and kicked off the first year that Joy ran a shawl club alongside her other very popular yarn clubs.

Created for a set of seven mini skeins this little shawl was great fun to knit. More details can be found here.

I really enjoyed creating a design for the shawl club and was over the moon when Joy asked me to come back again for 2019!

The Knitting Goddess Shawl Club 2019

This year I will be designing all six shawls for shawl club … which means I get to play with the idea of shawl shapes and colour all year long!

I thought it would be fun to talk about the inspiration for next years shawl collection and run through some of the details in this blog post.

What does the shawl club include?

Six instalments featuring 120g of yarn from Joy at The Knitting Goddess and a pattern created by me for each specific colourway set.

The yarn for 2019 is TKG Bluefaced Leicester and Masham 4ply. A stunning lofty base that is an utter joy to knit with. This is what Joy says about this lovely pure wool base:

I love this yarn. In it’s natural state it’s a soft warm silver colour, and it dyes up beautifully. Neither wool has been super wash treated, so it’s one to hand wash (and it’s not for socks!)  – but it’s the most perfect shawl yarn as it has lots of loft which gives you warmth.

Each instalment has 100g of main colour and a 20g contrasting mini skein. The colours are very “Joy” and the subtle colour of the yarn, from the Masham fibre, adds a real depth to the semi-solid colourways.

When does the shawl club start?

The club starts in January and a new design will be released every two months throughout the year. Meaning you will get a package in January, March, May, July, September and November.

How much does it cost?

You can choose to sign up for the full year (£185.25 incl VAT + postage) or for an individual month (£32.50 incl VAT + postage). Sign ups for 2019 are now open. They will close at the end of November unless sold out before then…

Postage is available worldwide!

Will the patterns be very complicated?

All of the designs will be accessible for a range of knitters from adventurous beginner to more experienced knitters looking for a relaxing knit. None of the patterns will feature particularly complication techniques or require huge amounts of concentration to knit. You may find new-to-you techniques in the shawls, but fear not - each pattern will have tutorial links and clear detailed instructions - ensuring you have a stress free knitting adventure.

The patterns will be:
- Clear and easy to follow.
- Any charts will be accompanied by full written instructions.
- A schematic will be included showing size and shape.
- Tutorial videos will be available for a wide range of techniques used in the shawls.
- Hints and tips to help you enjoy your shawl adventure.

The patterns and colourways will be exclusive to club members for one month.

Will details of the design be released ahead of time?

While we know that many of you like a surprise we also know that sometimes it is better to get a sense of what you are buying. This year Joy and I are going to have a “secret page” on her website where you can view the colours and some shalw snippets before you commit to the club.

If you love a surprise - don’t worry - you can just avoid the well hidden “secret page” …

Tell me more about the inspiration for the shawl club…

I love seeing how Joy plays with colour in her yarn clubs and to echo this playful creativity I wanted to take a shawl journey of sorts for 2019. Throughout the collection my aim has been to play with shape in various ways.

What does this mean in practice?

There will be shawls with shapes within shapes and in some months I will be creating shapes with colour and texture. To add variety to the collection and create wearable pieces I am also extending the meaning of shawls a little to encompass all “neck-warming” items of knitwear.

Here are the six inspiration images I have used to create the shawl designs to give you a sense of what each design may look like.
